Hydraulics Glossary: Components and Technical Terms

Hydraulics

Definition: Technology for transmitting force, energy, and motion via pressurized fluids, usually hydraulic oil.

Application: The basis of all hydraulic systems in commercial vehicles, municipal vehicles, tippers, cranes, sweepers, and special-purpose vehicles.

Hydraulic System

Definition: The entirety of all hydraulic components such as pumps, valves, lines, cylinders, or motors.

Application: Working and drive hydraulics in commercial vehicles, e.g., in loading cranes, hook lifts, or suction and flushing vehicles.

Hydraulic Pump

Definition: Converts mechanical drive power (e.g., from the power take-off) into hydraulic flow.

Application: Central power source for all hydraulic consumers in commercial vehicles.

Fixed Displacement Pump

Definition: Hydraulic pump with a fixed displacement volume per revolution.

Application: Simple and robust applications like tipper hydraulics or standard auxiliary units.

Variable Displacement Pump

Definition: Hydraulic pump with variable displacement volume for demand-based power adjustment.

Application: Energy-efficient Load-Sensing systems in modern commercial vehicles.

Gear Pump

Definition: Robust hydraulic pump with gears, simple design, and cost-efficient.

Application: Municipal vehicles, sweepers, power take-offs.

Axial Piston Pump

Definition: High-performance hydraulic pump for high pressures and variable flow rates.

Application: Travel drives, power-intensive hydraulic systems in the commercial vehicle sector.

Hydraulic Motor

Definition: Converts hydraulic energy into rotating mechanical motion.

Application: Driving sweeper brushes, winches, vacuum pumps, or conveyor systems.

Hydraulic Cylinder

Definition: Linear actuator for generating lifting or pressing movements.

Application: Tipping bodies, outriggers, lifting arms, and flaps on commercial vehicles.

Directional Control Valve

Definition: Controls the flow direction of the hydraulic oil and thus the direction of movement of cylinders or motors.

Application: Central control component in working and drive hydraulics.

Proportional Valve

Definition: Enables stepless regulation of pressure or flow rate.

Application: Sensitive control of crane movements and work functions.

Pressure Relief Valve

Definition: Limits the maximum system pressure to protect components.

Application: Safety-relevant component in every hydraulic system.

Load Sensing

Definition: Hydraulic system that automatically adjusts pressure and flow rate to the load.

Application: Energy-efficient commercial vehicles with variable workloads.

Open Circuit

Definition: Hydraulic circuit where the oil flows back into the tank after the consumer.

Application: Classic working hydraulics in municipal and special-purpose vehicles.

Closed Circuit

Definition: Hydraulic circuit where the oil circulates directly between pump and motor.

Application: Hydrostatic travel drives in sweepers or special-purpose vehicles.

Power Take-Off (PTO)

Definition: Mechanical power takeoff from the vehicle transmission to supply the hydraulics.

Application: Driving hydraulic pumps in commercial and special-purpose vehicles.

Hydraulic Oil

Definition: Working medium for energy transmission, lubrication, and cooling.

Application: Operating fluid for all hydraulic systems in mobile use.

Hydraulic Filter

Definition: Removes particles and contamination from the hydraulic oil.

Application: Protection of pumps, valves, and motors, especially in mobile use.

Hydraulic Power Unit

Definition: Compact unit consisting of pump, tank, valves, and drive.

Application: Self-sufficient hydraulic solutions for special-purpose vehicles or stationary applications.
